Cardboard chair for ALA 100

Design process: We all thought about the project and sketched some possible designs. We came together as a group and discussed the designs as well as what building materials we would most likely have access to. Next we collected cardboard and began testing out some of our ideas. We ended up with a small scale prototype which was different from any of our original sketches but contained some of the best ideas from several different proposals. Finally we cut new pieces of cardboard in order to build a large version of the prototype.
Cradle to cradle: Our chair came straight out of on campus recycling bins and will return there once comfortable seating device which not only looks cool but is also durable and made completely of recyclable cardboard. After all the prototyping our group started to run out of useable cardboard for constructing the actual chair, so using as little excess material as possible was very important to our final design.
Cardboard source: Our cardboard came out of a recycling bin on campus, however we had to use discretion in choosing our final building materials. Many of the cardboard samples we found were laminated and printed on with special ink, or were held together using lots of glue. We decided that, even though they were made mostly with paper, those pieces had too many extra components for us to use.
Weight: Our final chair weighs 25.6 ounces.
