EIS president Helen Connor received a standing ovation after delivering a rousing speech at a rally after a huge demonstration in Glasgow on Saturday 6th March 2010 which marked the start of a major campaign to stop the assault on education. She attacked both the Westminster government and the Scottish local governments for their part in slashing our educational services. There may be differences between the Westminster government and the Scottish governments and they may be blaming each other for the cuts in our services but "why must our children pay?" said Helen Connor and the campaign against education cuts was launched on this theme and slogan. Different levels of government and different political parties may be blaming each other for the lack of spending in the right places and on the right things but children are not to blame and should not have to suffer in their education because of this. She challenges the government: "I would like to pose a question, and I probably mean the Westminster government: are they saying that our children are less important than the funding of Trident missiles? Are they seriously saying that our children are less important than the funding of a war in Afghanistan? Are they seriously saying that our children are less important than the provision of identity cards?" - and I think they are - then it is time we said in our union and in our movement that we do not go along with that. We think that our children are probably the most important thing in this country: after all they are the future of this country.
