The Yakovlev Yak-36 (NATO reporting name: Freehand) was a Soviet technology demonstrator for a VTOL multi-role combat aircraft.

The aircraft had vectored thrust engines, similar to the Harrier. One engine was mounted forward of the cockpit, and one was below the cockpit. The exhaust exited through vectoring nozzles in the center of gravity which were vectorable through about 90º.

The Yak-36 made its first hover on 9 January 1963, the first transition from vertical take-off to forward flight and back to vertical landing on 16 September 1963.

The next development step was the Yak-38 which flew for the first time in 1971 as the Yak-36MP.

  • @brunoraoni is there evidence that the cold war is still ongoing?

  • @emancoy

Did you relly think the cold war its finish?

  • @binaway k thanks

  • @emancoy The French, Dausalt Balzac, was the first supersonic VTOL. But it's small carrying capacity made it impractical, as well as it could only take off and land on a large concrete structure.

  • Appears to use pretty much the same system as the earlier x14 of 1957.

  • @ShitFromTransASS good thing the cold war ended, I imagine a world with very dangerous planes from both sides fighting it out. Nukes wiping out cities, It would be an awesome sight, but also a very terrifying one that I don't want to be in it.

  • @emancoy Its Yak-141, its prototypes were ready for production but were tested short time before USSR collapsed. After that project was cancelled because of lack of funding. So it never went into full production.

  • Does anyone knows if its true that the Yak was the first VTOL fighter that could go supersonic?

    N

  • @a10anhul The USSR was the leader in everything during the Cold War... It was 25 years ahead of the NATO forces.
