Mike revolutionized the sport. He never really got the credit he deserved because so many people thought body boarders were dudes who couldn't stand on a surf board. I was raised in Kona and in the early 80's Mike Stewart and Rock Kahele were the hardest charges on the west side. Mike would tweak his boogie boards and the designs and test the in huge surf at Magic Sands and Puako. Rock Kahele would get the biggest waves and deepest barrels on a McDonald's tray. Both of these guys were fearless

The best part about surfers bagging on Mike, is that almost all of the surfers on the North Shore, esp. the big wave riders, totally respect Mike and all that he's done...he's an innovator and true waterman that, if you actually know what you're talking about, is impossible to deny...he surfs, boogies, and is something like a 10x bodysurfing champ at Pipe...

To all the sticks bringin' their daft inferiority complexes into this thread - Have a look at Jamie O'Brien riding Pipe on a bodyboard...and then have a look at Kainoa riding Pipe on a stick. You might just realize something.
