Please visit http://www.jimrichter.com. Tab for this tune is available there.

I grew up listening to Homer and Jethro (my dad was a fan who remembered seeing them at a county fair as a kid in the late 40's or early 50's) and have recently returned to listening to a lot of Jethro Burns.

I am by no means a jazz mandolinist, but revisiting Jethro is pushing me to really get back and work on some technique.

As most of you know, this tune is an old Fats Waller tune that has become a jazz standard. I first heard it 20 years ago through Sam Bush, who did it on the PBS show The Lonesome Pine Special. It was filmed a few months after Jethro died and was his tribute to him.

I'm still in the process of making this one "mine," so please excuse any tripped up fingers.

  • Love it!! I heard Peter Oshtrushko do that tune and was amazed at how well a piano tune crossed over to mandolin. Do you give lessons????? lol

  • I give lessons -- if you're out in the south central Indiana area!

  • did you do that by ear or did you get the sheet music

  • Learned it by listening to a tape of Jethro Burns that I have

  • Nice picking' man!

  • Nice!

  • Very nice. I'm slowly struggling to play Jitterbug Waltz on mando. You play beautifully. I have my work cut out.

I had a mando buddy who took mando lessons from Jethro while he lived in Evanston, IL. He influence was most apparent. And my mando friend play his chops in a Reggae band in Chi-town area, no less. You never know what mando players want to be when they grow up.

  • Very fleet! Like it a lot.

  • I appreciate your unique voicing of this classic standard - really makes me curious to see what Jethro did with it... Thanks for the tabs!

  • lets see you do it then

  • I love this one.
