Joe Rosenthal's photograph of the flag raising on Mt. Suribachi provided the Marine Corps with an unforgettable brand icon, but Iwo Jima was also a place where 5,931 individual Marines were lost (killed, missing, or died of wounds). An additional 17,272 were wounded.
That's a lot of blood, muscle and bone in a battle that took place between February 19 and March 26, 1945.

The bravery the Marines displayed on Iwo Jima required actions beyond measure, and reflected great credit upon themselves and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Marine Corps. To the Marines of WWII and the Marines currently forward deployed on the sharp edge of the sword in the middle east. Semper Fidelis ...CPL USMC

Hell, these are Marines. Men like them held Guadalcanal and took Iwo Jima. Bagdad ain't shit.
Marine Major General John F. Kelly
The raising of that flag on Suribachi means a Marine Corps for the next five hundred years.
James Forrestal, Secretary of the Navy; 23 February 1945
(the flag-raising on Iwo Jima had been immortalized in a photograph by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal)
