  • The best video of a real macchiato on ive found on youtube. I usually add about 1/2 tsp of cold milk as well. It gives you a nice layered effect. Pure espresso, stained espresso and crema. I have to limit myself to five of these a day working behind a machine..

  • @bnz500 I stopped it with the dairy, but at one time I was totally on the same train with you :) - Kat

  • This is not entirely accurate. First, macciato means, simply, 'marked.' The mark to which this actually refers is plain or steamed milk. The dollop of milk foam was used later as a way for waiters to differentiate between plain espresso and espresso macciato. While this may technically be an espresso macciato, this description would be only technical. More traditionally, there would be milk in the espresso itself, and, moreover, milk foam is not implicit in the beverage at all.

  • @antibellumtroubador I disagree; maybe that's what it's evolved to but I often order macchiatos that are prepared exactly that way (and prepared them this way for years as a barista). But everyone can make any drink they like as they like -- that's what coffee is all about :) - Kat

  • I love macchiato's. I ordered one at a local "coffee house" and was handed a 20 oz. disposable cup with a shot of the weakest espresso I've ever had and a ton of steamed milk... I went back and said "Can you just give me a s hot of espresso with a little foam on top? And the "barista" told me if I wanted that, I should have ordered it that way. Those quotes are completely necessary. I love where I live, but it's really hard to find decent espresso around here.

  • @JimmyDThing Yeah - the converse was when I was working as a barista 15 years ago and had people order a macchiato, only to be angry when I didn't serve them the Starbucks version. It has to be one of the worst things they've done to coffee culture, IMHO (particularly because I am a macchiato drinker and tired of explaining myself outside of Italian restaurants :D ) - Kat
