http://www.thefrugalfilmmaker.com Inexpensive work lights are quite popular for spraying light everywhere on a microbudget set. Today we look at some tweaks to make them more useful.

  • Can you please explain how you attached the 3 prong plug? I'm totally clueless on that without some direction

  • @Infenro Y'know, it's been so long, I can't remember. I'll have to take one apart and report back. Maybe a supplemental video is in order for this.

  • Let me also say, that I don't intend any of what I say as mean spirited. I' m sure your a kind person, and that you don't want to hurt anyone. But I would also point out that in the Tota design pictured that they are using a scrim that serves as protective barrier between teh bulb and everything else. Lowel took the design even further in the v-light making a glass tube (looks like a guitar slide) a requirement to protect people from exploding bulbs.

  • @CameronMcCasland Your issue with the work light hack is a valid one. I honestly only thought of the glass as strictly for weather proofing, but I can see how it would protect the user from exploding glass. I will make a follow-up video featuring a way to address this.

  • @CameronMcCasland I'm sorry you're not a big fan, but to say I "never" take safety into account is very presumptuous. There is nothing wrong with the PVC stands and the video already addresses your concerns of instability with the third stabilizer leg. I have never intended for anyone to get hurt making my stuff (and would never want that, obviously), but for you to add "or killed" is just ridiculous. How would that even be possible?

Of course there's always danger involved when you're working with electricity. And PVC stands suck, of course they suck, its PVC! Its not like C-stands aren't dangerous when they're used incorrectly. Thats why you test and practice set-ups before using equipment on a real shoot, its a phrase I like to call 'common fucking sense' and if people 'kill themselves', as you say, doing a DIY project watching a youtube video its their own fault not taking the proper safety procautions

  • Geez dude you're like the Macgyver of production gear. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You have a great voice for voice overs too.

  • @thefrugalfilmmaker would love to know how to do this. keep up the great work!

  • Is there a way to make this portable?

  • I'm sorry that pvc light stand is the worst thing I've ever seen. But as for the worklight portion of the video - very cool!

  • Yuh, removing the special glass that blocks the UV was even dumber. Few people

understand these light must have filters to protect people for the UV of these power lights.

    MUCH worse than sunlight.

  • good one

  • Loved it.

  • You should so a tutorial on how you cut off the original cord and replaced it. That's something I'd like to do as well, but I haven't the slightest clue how its done.
