  • Looks like a great way to make a working key for a lock where the key is missing. How do you acquire the blanks, though? Also, how do you know which blank you need for the lock? Please excuse my ignorance as I'm not a locksmith and am very new to this stuff.

  • @eddiespencer1 blanks are available online or from some hardware stores.

(if you are not a locksmith)

as for knowing what blank you use, there are index and reference books, but with a little practice,ID'ng the keyway just by looking, becomes quite easy.(for most commonly found door & padlocks ...auto locks go by make, model and year of the vehicle.)

  • is it yours site - locksmiths-lockout. com ?

  • @The333Johnny no. why do you as, and what would lead you to believe that is my site?

  • I know you said not to put tumblers in a vice, but can I file the tumblers down instead of a blank? I have 4 locks and I want them all to work with the same key.

  • @dropfry it iS do able , but i strongly suggest u just go to a smith an buy the correct size pins.

  • @wizwazzle I was told that most locksmiths and hardware stores won't sell an uncut blank. I've never tried to buy one, so I don't know from personal experience.

Also, if a person can carve a key to match a locks pin set, couldn't a person craft a pinset to match an existing key? I imagine this would be far more intricate and labor-intensive.

  • I just bought a key punch on the internet a while back because I don't have time to file them anymore. Also, I'm at the point where I just pull out the bottom pins and already know what size it is depending on the make of the lock, so the process goes pretty quick for me.

    Take care!

  • A Far Easier and Faster way... You want 5 of the same key correct?

    1. Take the FIRST key, then take a blank key. Put the two together in your vice.

    2. Take your Sharpie and draw the outline of the first key onto the blank using the key as a guide.

    3. Use your file to replicate the first key using your Sharpie markings as a guide.

    4. Compare the New key to your FIRST key, file a little more if necessary till you have a perfect copy.

Repeat for the other 4 keys..

  • Great video

    Thanks
