Better Lathe Than Never

ToolGirl Mag Ruffman is busy making a desk using bamboo plywood. In this unusual project she laminates the ply into blocks and then turns them on a lathe to make shapely legs for her new desk.

OMG! this is just awsome. i'm currently doing a class project about bamboo. it's just so hard to find information about it onthe net. this video really showed that bamboo can really be used like normal plywood. but my questioon is, is bamboo plywood any cheaper than normal plywood from hardwood? will the handling of bamboo plywood be the same as other plywood? different web site have diff claims. some say it is more exspensive but some say it is cheaper. so i'm not sure how. pls help. thanks

In my experience, bamboo is more expensive than most plywood. It's about $200 per sheet (in Ontario, Canada).

Looks like you had a great time, and I can see you completed a nice project, too. I hope you get to play with the lathe a lot more.

Now that you're more comfortable with the tools and methods, I encourage you to stand a little closer, and anchor that left hand against the toolrest -- that's going to be safer, and more controlled.

I'm not so worried about how you sand, but cloth pieces can get dragged into the lathe, so be careful with that.

omg fantastic but PLEASE be careful i got 2 point out your sanding&polishing techniques are VERY dangerous never use 2 hands stretched across the top of the workpiece coz if the sandpaper or cloth catch it will pull you into & onto the lathe, only use 1 hand UNDER the workpiece in a cuping motion and move back & forth up & down the work, then if the sandpaper or cloth catches on the work the only thing that will happen is the paper or cloth will be pulled out of your hand hope this helps, enjoy
