Just a few decades ago the Chusan palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) started to spread and regenerate outside the gardens in forests across the borderline region of southern Switzerland and North Italy. This new northernmost wild palm population is a genuine witness of climate change. Due to rising winter temperatures by up to 0,5 degrees per decade, the cold-hard Chusan palm was able to survive also in the forests without protection.

  • @Fiskij The thing to keep in mind is that the surface of Lake Maggiore is less than 200m above sea level, and the palms grow wild up to 600m. Four hundred meters makes a pretty big difference in terms of temperature, a good 2-3C colder. And the higher hills are also removed from the immediate moderating influence of the lake water itself, making the winter climate colder still. And that's just where they are growing wild; you could probably grow one in a garden up to 800m elevation.

  • They don't mention that these "tropical" palm trees, f.e. Trachycarpus Fortunei, grows naturally in the cold Himalayas at up to 2400m?

No wonder they spread and thrive in the alps. And there are lots of other different cold hardy palm trees that grows in the "temperate" region.
