Citizen Kane is unimpressive when compared against modern film. That's not a fair comparison to make, of course... but if you're choosing a movie to watch and don't particularly care about historical significance, you'd probably rather watch, say, The Departed.

@Bobzeaux I won't say it's the greatest film ever, and my opinion is certainly not definitive; but one thing to watch out for is how Charles Foster Kane seamlessly morphs from a man with principles into one who knows only ambition. There's also some clever cinematography and framing, enough to warrant some attention in RedLetterMedia's review of "Revenge of the Sith". We take a lot of "Citizen Kane"'s technique for granted today, but it was an innovator, which is part of why it stood out.
