This final of this piano sonata is the most amazing and most impressive music I ever heard (as the beginning of the Scythian Suite).
It moves my soul and I do not know why. I imagine a Russia winning the war and celebrating the victory by mocking the enemy. Finally it gets so ugly that even the joy of the so desired peace must take in consideration the suffering of the enemy soldiers who are tortured endlessly by the russians who have suffered for so long.
I love it every time I hear it.

@weikko79 Well, the first two movements sound really depressed, not just melancholical. Prokofiev isn't is usual self here, it really feels like another composer.

@flippert0 If it's the part where Prokofiev feels most at home, isn't it natural that it's the best part as well? Why should Prokofiev strive to be a second-rate Shostakovich when he can be a first-rate Prokofiev? :)

@weikko79 Hmm, no. The last movement is highly dynamic, "typical" Prokofiev. The first two movements otoh are highly unusual for him, it's almost as if he tries to compose like Shostakovitch there.

@P0L0K0P I think his "exile" from Russia was what made his music even more emotive
The finale is the best part of them all!

One of the greatest sonatas ever written. Richter is unreal, it's no wonder Prokofiev liked his interpretations so much.
