Simple fun video showing cult SGI Indy machine, booting Irix 6.5 to login screen.
---------------------
specs of this system:
Production started: ~1993/94.
CPU: risc/Mips R5000SC 180Mhz (second cache)
RAM: 256Mb
GFX: 24bit XL graphics,2D acc. 3D in software/CPU.
NET: 100Mbit/via G130 phobos card.
DISK: when recorded this video was DNES IBM (7200rpm) now seagate cheetah 73G 10K rpm. now the indy boot faster than showed.
AUDIO: on/board + video in/out
Mouse/Kbd: standard PS2
TheCam: (on top of the monitor) is a cult well known IndyCam with digital signal directly attached to the system via special connector.
OS: Irix 6.5.22m it can run debian mips linux, but never tryed it/ using Irix is half fun of the story, performance.
MON: well it was my first Flat trinitron sony tube ibm p76, and i hated to throw it away :(
------------------------
for what i use it ::: web serving of simple web pages and some real projects demonstration tasks... still in real production environment!!! because of energy low costs, silent work and flexible configurations... don`t forget - it`s ROCK SOLID UNIX in small size ZUPACOOL box, want more ?! ...
------------------------
expected prices on eBay: from $5-$100+ depending on model/installed features.
-------------------------
bad thing: this machine has the MAC address stored in non volatile ram (dallas chip) that has the working life about 10 years. without the MAC the Indy system will not boot. The newer ur system is - less are chances that you will must replace and re-program this chip...

  • @minibaby123456789 :) indeed, at the time i recorded this video, was running an classic IBM ultrastar with its recognisable "woink" :) but now inside that baby i run an Cheetah 10K7 ;) ultrafast and more or less quiet :)

  • This brings back memories. I worked at SGI in 1996 and 1997, and I used an R4400 Indy running IRIX 5.3 as my workstation. Those were the days!

  • The N64 was based on the Indy's custom graphics hardware.

  • @KaxiLaxi o yeah, real fckin' UNIX, furthermore one of the most powerful ever made. This is Silicon Graphics IRIX dude, an dream os and an dream machine ...

  • so this one is UNIX too?

  • Hey, were these used to do "pre-rendered" video for video games consoles and such in the 90's (and probably movies too) or were those even more powerful? did the machine originally have 256MB of ram in 1993/94? if so, that's insane!

  • @Ricouzuki somewhat. The N64 graphics engine is more powerful.

  • @douro20 can we get n64 like graphics performance out of the indy then?

  • It would be fun to buy an old exotic high end workst that would have cost a kablillion dollars back when it was new. But then i'd have to find something to do with it or i'd just be bothered. Some kind of max headroom Kraftwerkesque talking vector face that predicts your mood based on aggregated news and provides morning toast and light conversation?. Unfortunately i am dumb and unequal to such a project or such a computer.

  • @twylo lol my dad still works at SGI
