My motto has always been "on time and on budget", and it resulted in a fresh approach to the management of our country's metallurgical resources.

Major mining projects are hugely complex undertakings. Exploration, identifying ore bodies, conducting feasibility studies, design, construction, and the startup of a mine — it's a tricky business.

I was a young man when I saw the business opportunities that could come from advising large industrial companies on how to develop Canada's vast natural resources. In 1958 I took a chance, quitting my job as manager and head of Research and Development at Quebec Iron & Titanium to start my own consulting firm, Hatch Ltd.

My approach to project management was relatively new to the mining industry. My colleagues and I guided clients through the critical stages of a project — and made sure the product was of high quality.

By the 1970s, the company I started in Toronto had become an international success, consulting on metallurgical and chemical projects worldwide. We spearheaded some of the biggest projects in Canada, worked in more than 150 nations, and employed thousands of people globally.
