With the ubiquity of the internet, the process of international counter-cultural integration is made simple. On youtube, gothic teens publish videos of themselves dancing, doing their make-up, talking about their favorite bands, and making d.i.y. goth accessories. In the virtual arena, you can be anyone you choose, have an online identity, a clone of your favorite youtube star, or become a cyber industrial tribal goth medley. Essentially the development of social, counter-cultural scenes has greatly altered. Baby Bat is an experiment in learned subcultural identity and membership in the age of youtube.
In goth culture, "baby bat" is a term for wannabe goths, who only know the superficial side of the goth world. The internet opens new doors for the baby bat, the growing stages of subcultural affinity and affirmation. The five people featured in the video have learned their dance styles from youtube videos posted by gothic teens all over the world. The subjects were given freedom to choose particular youtube personas to inspire them in dance, costume, and attitude. Some chose shadow dancing, others goth slide, industrial-goth, french jump-style, dutch cyber goth, etc. The focus was on fusing an individual with a subcultural identity and expressing it through dance. The subjects underwent the process of social learning via the internet, and their identities will be channelled back into it as an ongoing transmutational filter of culture. To encourage the instructional nature, the video is constructed in chunks of varying speed with dance tips taken from online message boards.

  • wonderful concept. I understand where you are going with this and it's quite a good social anthropology study/statement.

  • too long; didn't watch

nothing happens, just a drag queen prancing about

your comment is dull and unenlightening

of course the internet serves as medium for the excange of ideas

you must have picked up a newspaper for m 2001 to realise something that obvious...

  • weeeeeeeeeeeird o.o

  • Was this intended to show of the dances or the goth culture or simply a social experiment? Slightly confused? Been in the goth/industrial club scene a while and I think it was a good try but personally many of the dances seemed to miss the mark for me.

  • OH MY GOTH
