The night after John Newton aka Johnny Nitro suddenly left the planet Tommy Castro stood in with Johnny's Doorslammers both past and present at their regular Sunday night gig (2/20/11) at SF's The Saloon so his friends, fans and family could do their grieving while celebrating Nitro's life in song and story. This clip shows Tommy kicking things off with "Calling San Francisco", a song he's spared with Johnny on many times, before an evening of rotating musicians playing to a packed house. It was the most fun I've had being sad in a long time. On stage for this one was Tommy Castro (guitar/vocals), Shad Harris (keytar), Tony Perez (sax), Michael Peloquin (sax), Joe Lococo (guitar), Rick Sankey (drums), and Burton Winn (bass).

  • My 1st trip to SF was in 84 ( I lived in New Orleans)and the second I walked into the Saloon,I was hooked for life. In the dozens of times of been back since, the music at the Saloon was (and still is) my main reason for coming back again and again. I just learned of Nitro's passing last nite, seeing this up here is really a blessing,as was being there seeing so many editions/mutations of the Doorslammers over the years.

  • Damn - wish I could have been there no matter looks like Johnny was there in everyone's heart & soul.

  • R.I.P. Johnny!

  • Man, they should put this on a tribute CD - great stuff!!

  • Only saw Johnny once, couple mos ago at Saloon - just in time as it turned out. Tommy Castro (who I've seen numerous times) & the others are great musicians.

  • Tommy. Class act. he and Johnny were good friends... and at the notification of his loss... tommy stepped up on his own without question.

As did almost 100% of the blues musicians in the Bay area. not included in this video, I saw (in no particular order...) Steve Freund, Alvon, Pat Wilder, Wendy DeWitt, Chris & Jesse Cobb, Ron Hacker, Jan Fanucchi, Stan Erhart, Kathy Tejka, Daniel Castro, David Landen.... it just kept comin.

    Thank you everyone.... Johnny's smilin'
