Originally trained as a jewellery and industrial designer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, Gijs Bakker rose to fame after the founding of Droog Design in 1993 with Renny Ramakers. The pair brought Dutch design to the world, exhibiting the work of young designers at influential shows like the Salone de Mobile. With over 40 years of experience as an educator he has arguably had one of the greatest influences in Dutch design and there are few prominent Dutch designers today who would not cite him as an influence in at least some way. In 2009 he left Droog Design and has since continued his own practice, lecturing, and investigating the relationship between craft and design in the Netherlands and now in Taiwan with the 'Yii' project (2009). In 'Yii' he seeks to establish a stronger coherence between local Taiwanese craft and contemporary design in Taiwan.
