In November 2007 the registered charity, Future Talent, launched its Future Champions initiative in a joint project with the Hallé Orchestra. Only two music services were chosen from the UK to take part in this initiative and in a major coup for the borough, one of the chosen partners was the Oldham Music Service.
A short list of 12 finalists drawn from the Oldham Music Centre's talented pupils was auditioned in January 2008 at the Oldham Music Centre in front of a panel which included Katharine Kent (formerly the Duchess of Kent) and Dr. Eileen Bentley, Director of Music at the Music Centre.
The three young Oldham musicians who won awards were Joseph Donmall (Gold award - cello), Adele Grogan (Silver award - alto saxophone) and Andrew Ashworth (Bronze award - cornet). Part of the prize included an invitation to perform at a gala concert at the world famous Ronnie Scott's Club in London and this concert took place on November 27th. A fourth student of the Oldham Music Centre, Farhaan Shah, was also invited to take part in the concert to show off his beat boxing talents that had come to the attention of the Hallé's education officer, Steve Pickett.
Gerard Booth, Head of the Orchestral Wind Department, and his wife Tracey, also a member of the Oldham Music Service staff, chaperoned the students for the duration of the event.
In Gerard's own words: "The students all absolutely excelled themselves in the evening's show, to such an extent that they were invited back to perform together in an unscheduled jam with the phenomenal house band. Indeed, Adele's sax playing was so good that she was invited back to play with the band on a third occasion towards the end of the evening".
Another highlight was Farhaan's amazing beat boxing technique which astounded and enthralled the audience in equal measure. The overall winner of the Oldham competition, cellist Joseph Donmall, played a Tarantella by W.H.Squire.
