Rantoul, Illinois is a community that became economically depressed following the closing of the Chanute Air Force Base in the early 1990s. located less than 15 miles from Champaign, the community is microcosm of Hispanics, African Americans, and rural whites. Working in Rantoul High School with a group of juniors called Youth Democracy, has allowed the youth the ability to begin responding to the poverty and hard times that face their community. It is their goal to document stories and produce a documentary about the poverty and the depressed economy that persists in their community.
Good job with the reporting... very well done. I grew up in rantoul as well while it was an airbase in the 70's and 80's lots of great memories and people in that town. It is the people that make Rantoul not the base. Create your own economic engine in Rantoul, make something, sell something and be something and put Rantoul back on the map for part 2 - Back to the future !
