Microscopic view of VELCRO continuously unfastening!
(be sure to click "480p" for "high resolution" viewing)

Adhesive backed Velcro brand hook/loop fastening materials were applied to a double roller apparatus and viewed under the Infinivar Depth of Field Microscope in the LeRoy Eyring Center for Solid State Science at Arizona State University, Tempe.

Notice how few hooks and loops are actually entangled!

Many thanks to Sarah for her excellent work on this!

  • The rollers are about 2" in diameter. The velcro was attached in a circle around each roller. The video is looped several times. You can see the ends of the velcro strips every now and then.

  • I tried it first with a new digital camera on the microscope, but it has a very slow frame capture rate, so I found an old analog camera with 30 frames/sec. There are people on campus with high speed cameras, I mean really fast, but the lighting requirements are harder. It would be cool to zoom in and do super slow on one loop snapping from one hook.

    Was it a mile long?

  • Do you have a high speed camera?

It would be awesome to see this with high speed camera.
