GE Aviation engine bid lowest for India's jet fighter HAL LCA Tejas Bangalore, Sep 30 (IANS) General Electric's subsidiary GE Aviation was declared the lowest bidder for supplying engines to power India's second generation Hal lca Tejas fighters, the Light Combat Aircraft HAL LCA Mark-2, a senior official said Thursday.

GE Aviation emerged as the lowest bidder for supplying about 100 engines GE-F414 to fit into the LCA TEJAS Mk-2,' Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Chief Controller (R&D) Prahlada told IANS here.

Europe's Eurojet, a sister concern of Eurofighter that manufactures jet engines for its Typhoon fighter, was the other bidder short-listed for the multi-billion rupee tender after the global tender that was was floated in 2009 by the Indian defence ministry.

Price negotiations and contract finalisation will be worked in the next two months,' Prahlada said. 'GE Aviation will deliver 20 GE-F414 engines from 2014 and the rest will be manufactured in India under transfer of technology to our defence establishments.'

According to a statement by the state-run DRDO, the price negotiating committee for the alternate engine declared GE Aviation the lowest bidder after commercial quotes of both the bidders were compared following evaluation and acceptance of their technical offer.

We have decided to go for a new engine for the HAL LCA Tejas Mark Mk-2 after the Indian Air Force IAF sought a better engine with higher rate of performance in terms of speed, thrust and vector than GE-404 engines being used in HAL LCA Tejas Mark-1,' Prahlada pointed out.

The IAF Indian air force has placed an order with the defence behemoth Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd HAL to supply 40 HAL LCA Tejas fighters to Indian air force.

The GE-F414 engines will be developed by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) in Bangalore in collaboration with other DRDO agencies such as Aeronautical Development Agency and HAL,' Prahlada said.

The Kaveri engine, which is in the advance stage of development at GTRE, will be fitted in the first generation LCA Tejas Mk-1.

  • what a great pilot ... and what a crappy plane...india should not waste its young pilot's talent on this trash ...... did anybody else notice how this aircrafts jolts after landing ....it is way abnormal for a fighter aircfraft.. ..but thanks to great piloting skills to save the day

  • @86punjabi

Com'on Mr.pakistani. don't pretend to be an Indian. when we need your pakistani advice on what we should do, we will ask for it. so STFU

  • Why cant we develop Kaveri engines ......it sounds like an Indian man with American heart. When can we complete projects like this on our own? Its NRI in my thinking.

  • @anujbagdi

    Dear,

Developing engine is no easy task. even countries like china struggle to make their own engines. our kaveri engines is really good. but IAF want more thrust. that's why kaveri engine is rejected. right now kaveri engine is undergoing testing somewhere in russia.

  • Nice GE Engine!

  • @conworldus

This model/Prototype is not powered by GE engine.

  • great Wow!

  • @shreyasisro2 rubbish........

  • ha ha ha i like how they named it LCA , then comes MCA after that ..Heavy combat aircraft ...next ...O_o ...any guess?

  • @86punjabi I feel pity on your paki thinking. Not your fault anyways. People living on american aid and defending using american/chinese weapons wouldn't know either evolution or development.

1000 failures result in one big success and thats how cookie crumbles.

Look at development of history of F-16's your paki air force use. Check how many years it takes for the development and induction. Also check how many failures result in one success. Grow up jealous paki's.

    Nach na jane, Aangan tedha.

  • 92 JF-17s by the end of 2011...how many LCA-TEJAS would be in operational service by then?

tejas will be a failure tOo fOr sure, cz itX madE in india..

  • IAF will take years to integrate LCA Tejas and that means by than JF-17 Block 2 will be making its way into PAF.LCA has been hurrled into production after witnessing the success the JF-17 has got in the international airshows of ZUHAI and FARNBOROUGH & Turky....

  • LCA is a international joke! India only can buy Combat Aircraft from russia by super high cost. As a poor country, india government should spend limited money on their people's life.JF-17 is a success and mass production has started . JF-17 Block 2 is now in advance stages of development and testing .PAF will acquire between 250--350 JF-17 Fighters and these will be enough to support CAS Multirole and Interdiction operations against IAF , IN and IAF

  • they pour a bucket of piss on him and then put a cookie in his mouth XD, Tradition
