"I learned about flying from that..."

Not every landing can be perfect. However, training takes over and I am able to correct the problem.

I was landing a Crystal Airport in MN and flared too late, causing a series of bounces. On one of the bounces, I added power to stabilize; then slowly backed off the power, flared, and landed. I was able to salvage the landing as the runway was very long and I had plenty of time. In case the runway was short, I would have added full power and went around to try again.

My passengers are seasoned flyers and I was glad I was able to entertain them, per their comments after the landing. (pilot note, It was not as bad as it looks and I think the guy holding the camera embellished the bounces!!!)
:-)

November 2004, aircraft was a Cessna 172, tail number N324DM and was a rental from Anoka Flight Training.

  • I hope there was not a landing fee, you would have had to pay twice.

  • Nice save. We all go thru these landings. It just sucks that it happens when passengers are onboard. And the perfect ones tend to happen when ur alone.

  • You suck. Who gave you flying lessons, John Denver.

  • I got your girlfriend...

  • A little high on final. Try going around instead of diving for the numbers. Oh well, I've had some pretty horrific ones myself...

  • good centerline pride.

    the laugh is creepy though.

  • Sounds like one of those yellow rubber duck we put in the bathtub...

  • @cadetsmith1 Thing is it takes piss poor technique to have a botched landing like this one. I would have taken the controls from this guy, went around, and made him try again (with my hands on the controls the second time).

  • you can log 4 landing for that day!

  • U were coming to high buddy and then u dipped too soon should have gone around :_)

  • Another recovery method is to just pull back a little and hold it there. You might baloon up a little, but the speed bleeds off quickly and you'll settle back down with the correct speed.
