Beauty Spot - Pilot Mountain NC

Pilot Mountain in North Carolina or Mount Pilot as it was re-named for the TV show Andy Griffith starred during the 1960s. Folks from Mayberry would visit Mount Pilot for various reasons.

From the Department of Geological, Environmental & Marine Sciences

The top of Pilot Mountain, known as the Big Pinnacle, is a layer of gleaming white quartzite 200-feet thick. The quartzite represents a beach that existed in western North Carolina almost one billion years ago.

Pilot Mountain and the town are located south of Mount Airy or North of Winston Salem on hwy 52.

Thank you for a lovely reminder of where I spent my youth. I grew up in Winston-Salem, but every fall my father would load the family station wagon and take us all on a day trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway. I remember stopping for apples, various country stores and always stopping at Cumberland Gap. We'd eventually arrive at Pilot Mountain and spend a few hours there.

My home is now in Massachusetts, so I really enjoy seeing videos like this.

The top of pilot mountain has always looked unique to me. The only problem is that it is on the county lines of stokes and surry county. Why that is a problem is because I live in eastern Stokes County.

I remember me and my mom last year went on a really nice road trip it was long but worth it. We went from my cousin's house in mooresville to virginia to pilot mountain, we got some bbq then went to hanging rock. They have a nice little nature exhibit.
