READ! THIS IS DETAILED EXPLANATION!
Many people experience problems setting up and
switching keyboard layouts in lightweight desk-
top environments or lightweight window managers
like xfwm, ***box family, icewm, e17 etc...
Basically there is one simple command that can
solve this problem, here it is:

setxkbmap -option grp:switch,grp:alt_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll

In the end after the word "scroll" u will need
to add your keyboard layouts separated
by comma. I will use english and russian.
U can replace the "alt_shift" section with any
other key combination for switching layouts..

setxkbmap -option grp:switch,grp:alt_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll us,ru

Now u will have to paste this line to the END
of your /home/user/.bashrc file. It's a hidden
file and has "." in the beginning. Replace
"user" with your username. Use any
editor u want and scroll down till the end of
the file, i will use nano: sudo nano /home/username/.bashrc.
So now we paste the command with your layouts to the end of
the file. Hit Ctrl+x, u will be asked
to overwrite the existing file,
Hit "y" and Enter to save.

Now, when u inserted the command to your
.bashrc file. The settings will be kept even
after restart. So now u can use alt+shift or
whatever u choose for swithching the layouts

  • Hi,

I made this, but after restart nothing work. Now I search for any help 1 years long.

    Xubuntu 11.10, xfce 4.8

  • @MrStanleZ i think in xfce it is pretty straight forward now! u need to install the xfce4-xkb-plugin package with synaptic or apt-get. then right click the panel and click add items, there u will have the layout switching tool. cheers

  • @yooyoomine

Hi, its worked in Lubuntu 11.10 / Xubuntu 11.10 only if at startup I run terminal. If not, I have on panel only US layout. I think, its a way to something start a terminal at startup. But I dont know how to start and close it at startup sequence in Lubuntu / Xubuntu 11.10, in the file .bash.rc or in any other *. conf.

    Thank You, I searching next.

  • @MrStanleZ did u try too look in menus? in "settings" there is "startup applications" that is a part of xfce desktop environment. just paste the command there. it is there for sure cause i have seen it

Now its finally work as is in my video, indel LXDE, Lubuntu 11.10, Xubuntu 11.10.

  • This seems to be a very good solution, something that i've been looking for, but I couldn't found a .bashrc file. I created one myself and pasted that line but it didn't work when i restarted.

  • HI yooyoomine,
