why is it so hard to understand? I mean, I'm doing my PPL and I flew today from Elba Island Italy to Bresso Milan and I understood bugger all about this. My instructor must have thought I was a complete prick, but still I'm having trouble grasping the basic concept. When would I use VOR instead of a NDB or DME? Is one more reliable than another or that's not the point? By the way I fly the C172. ciao

Small blurry text and diagrams, distracting background music. Pity.

Try to think like a student pilot you will understand how much this video helps.

yep.
VOR = Very High Freq. Radio signals (It's like the light from a lighthouse and when your equipment picks it up, it tells you what direction you are from the VOR station.
NDB = Non-Directional Beacon, (it's where a tracking signal comes from and is more like a pulse signal.
DME = Distance Measuring Equipment. It is what tells the pilot how far he is from a location.
Not very thorough I know but, I hope it helps!

A VOR is slightly more accurate than an NDB and it shows where you are in relation to the beacon. An NDB show where the beacon is in relation to you. You pick this up on your ADF receiver in the aircraft. DME stands for distance measuring equipment. Pretty self explanitry.
