T.I.S Cumbria Ltd won the ultimate accolade of National Training Awards 2010 'Winner of the Year' in the Small Employer category at the UK Ceremony held on the 1 December at Old Billingsgate, London.
T.I.S. Cumbria Ltd. realised that there was a distinct engineering skills shortage in the nuclear industry. They found that by building their own in-house training facility they would be able to train up apprentices and fill the gap. Apprentices were therefore recruited straight out of local schools with the aim of bringing them up to a very high skill level in a short period of time. As a result, it has helped them to win large contracts with multinational companies, manufacturing efficiencies have risen significantly and T.I.S. Cumbria now boasts to have the top 10% of the Nuclear Skills apprentices in the UK.
The Judges saw powerful evidence demonstrating a successful, growing and profitable small business whose current performance and future is based firmly on and around the training programme for its apprentices. They have been an integral and fundamental part of the success of the business, making this an amazing story for apprenticeships.
