@Egglesplork I've good knowledge of Anglo/Irish history, particularly Folk music, and have never heard of the English taking away musical instruments. It would have been almost impossible to do, and a complete waste of time & resources. A Google search shows nothing, either. Oppressors, it seems, are not the only morons.
