***NOTICE TO ALL COMMENT-LEAVERS: I'm aware that Jenkins is a corner and Berry a safety, and that safeties generally have better stats than corners. Please don't argue this point in a comment.***

Eric Berry had a terrific season in 2008, dispite the fact that Tennessee went 5-7. He was the leader on a nationally-ranked top 5 defense and was tied for the most INTs in the nation with 7. He also broke the SEC records for INT return yards in a season and in a career during his breakout sophomore season. As of the end of the 2008-2009 season, he is 15 yards away from breaking the NCAA career INT return yardage record, which he will almost certainly pass in his upcoming junior season.

THIS WILL MAKE HIM THE MOST PROLIFIC INTERCEPTION RETURNER IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL HISTORY.

He was named a finalist for the 2009 Jim Thorpe Award along with USC's Taylor Mays and Ohio State's Malcolm Jenkins.

To say he had the best statistics of the 3 finalists was an understatement. Dispite the fact he nearly doubled all of both finalists' stats, Malcolm Jenkins won the award.

His stats were also remarkably similar to those of Charles Woodson's 1997 season, in which he controversially won the Heisman. He remains to this day the only defensive player to win the award. Many have already been critical of this comparison, citing the players playing different positions and Michigan's undefeated record as justification for Woodson's Heisman.

I'm aware that Berry will likely not even be considered a finalist for the award. Tennessee is not currently considered a championship contender. There are several prestigious offensive players whose status will further prevent his Heisman consideration (Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy, etc). However, none of these make Eric Berry any less deserving of the award. I believe he is the best player in college football today, regardless of team status or position, and I'm not alone.

  • @MichiganFan39 (facepalm)... I never accused you of saying Manning wasn't top 5. Just proving that he was indeed robbed by people in the media with an agenda.

  • @RondoGuitarDude all i said was why peyton did NOT win, and all of a sudden your saying i said something i didn't, your a dumbass, of course manning was top 5, i never said he wasn't, but your being a dumbass and saying i did

  • @MichiganFan39 Peyton actually had more 1st place votes than Woodson, but because so many people left him off of their ballots as a result of bias, he did not win. You want to try to argue that Peyton wasn't a Top 5 player that year? That's a complete joke of dirty politics and I feel it's completely ok to call that robbery. A player with 4 TDs all year wins the Heisman over one of the best college QBs of all time with 37 TD passes. Whatever. Eric Berry is better. Woodson is old anyway.

  • @MichiganFan39 I don't know where to begin. You want to talk stats? Let's talk stats. Woodson only touched the ball on offense a few times all year. He didn't accumulate one tenth of Peyton's stats. Furthermore, the player that won the Heisman in 1996 was Danny Wuerffel from Florida. Peyton's stats were very comparable to Wuerffel's and even better in some areas. But the media did not want 2 SEC QBs to win 2 years in a row, so hundreds of people left Peyton completely off of their ballots.

  • @RondoGuitarDude i said charles woodson LEAD those teams to those accomplishments, i might not have said that the same way but i clearly meant it, peyton was not robbed, peyton was only on offense, and only had offensive stats coming to the heisman, while charles woodson was a triple threat, Special teams, Defense, and Offense, had stats all over the chart.

  • @MichiganFan39 You are making yourself appear more ignorant with every comment. First, Super Bowls and National Championships are team accomplishments. You can not credit a single player with those. Also, Berry has only been in the NFL 1 year. Woodson has been there for 13. To compare 13 years to 1 makes me think you are mildly retarded. Last, while the Heisman is an individual award it is made possible by being on a GOOD TEAM. 4th, Peyton was robbed but that is another story entirely.

  • @RondoGuitarDude charles woodson has a heisman trophy, national title, and super bowl ring, he lead all of those, he might not have lead the super bowl game, but he lead the pack to the game, he's a leader, and thats talent, i judge talent, and eric berry vs charles woodson does not compare.

  • @MichiganFan39 you need to stay on the message boards and leave the football talk to the big boys. You know as much about football talent as you do quantum physics: nothing.

  • @RondoGuitarDude but not in this case, because charles woodson is twice the player than berry will ever be

  • @MichiganFan39 maybe so but the point of my comment was to show the other guy that a Heisman does not make a player better than another.
