Swiss complete worlds longest tunnel

The completion of the world's longest rail tunnel has been completed in Switzerland, making way for a high-speed railway connection between northern and south-eastern Europe. The tunnel will also allow cargo traffic to move from trucks to train.

After 15 years of work, the worlds biggest drilling machine dug its way through the last patch of rock on Friday, connecting the two sections of the Gotthard Base tunnel which is 57km long and 2,000 metres below a mountain.

@BloodSlut I do think it is good that they are promoting the construction of underground transport and structures, theres alot of space down there and its better then carving up the surface, it is sad that 8 people lost their lives building it but I dont think accidents like that should stop these projects

This tunnel is part of a contract between Switzerlandand the EU: Reduce the number of lorrys on the highways and move the goods on the train. Kind of european north to south railway system. And the Alps are in the Way.

So the swiss "had" to spend billions and billions...

15 years just to excavate the tunnel, then another 7 years to prepare it for rail traffic. Wow.
