I switched but cannot get anything to install unless i am using the synaptic or apt- get. downloaded secondlife and drupal and cannot install them and I am not able to get my wireless to work and is it true that ipods will not work with this package. . I like the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS package
I am not a programmer and this seems harder than dos 6.0.

How do you install tarballs?

You should be able to extract them and run the appropriate commands as found in the INSTALL or README file.

You don't need a command line to install software, but it's my preferred method.
Most software comes in the forms of 'packages', which you can double-click or check on a list of packages to install, then click 'Apply' and wait a moment. As long as you have an internet connection, you can install anything. If you don't have an internet connection, you can download packages as files and install them.
Installing software in Linux is much easier than on Windows or Mac.
