I like to use Excel's Conditional Formatting to:
1) Dynamically highlight the cells that meet my criteria e.g. Above Average, 5 highest values, etc.
2) Apply special formatting to my spreadsheet - e.g. shade every other row to make it easier to read the data.

  • Which version of Excel do you use? 2003 or 2007?

If you use Excel 2007, this is really easy. In Coditional Formatting (after selecting the range of cells) you choose a "Number Filter" - on the drop-down menu, there is a selection for Above Average (also below average) this is a really great new feature in Excel 2007!

  • What if you want to see how many cells are selected by conditional formatting, for example to find out how many values are above the mean or median? Thanks.

  • Thanks for sharing this video! My favorite one is the coloring alternating rows!
