McCain gets his ass handed to him on anti-American convicted crook G. Gordon Liddy. Also known as "Gordon the Plumber."
Dave: I know, but you will also admit that we cannot really control who we interact with in our lives 100 percent. I mean -- you have --
(applause)
McCain: How long we interact with them and how we interact with them -- but the point, the point in this campaign is the economy and the economy --
Dave: Did you not have a relationship with Gordon Liddy?
McCain: Uh, I met him. I --
Dave: Did you attend a fundraiser at his house?
McCain: Gordon Liddy's?
Paul: I object, your honor.
Dave: We will be right back here... (laughter)

Yet none of this bothers McCain. Liddy has contributed thousands of dollars to his campaigns, held a fundraiser for McCain at his home and hosted the senator on his radio show, where McCain said, "I'm proud of you." Exactly which part of Liddy's record is McCain proud of?

Does he regret burgling the offices of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and setting in chain the resignation of a President? A vein twitches angrily on one of his scales, but he replies in a level voice, "No."

John Hawkins: Changing directions here, one of the things that people who try to discredit you often bring up is your comment back in 1994, "If the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms insists upon a firefight, give them a firefight. Just remember, they're wearing flak jackets and you're better off shooting for the head." What prompted that comment and other similar ones and do you regret giving a caller that advice?
G. Gordon Liddy: Well, no...

As Media Matters for America has noted, Liddy served four and a half years in prison in connection with his conviction for his role in the Watergate break-in and the break-in at the office of the psychiatrist of Daniel Ellsberg, the military analyst who leaked the Pentagon Papers. Liddy has acknowledged preparing to kill someone during the Ellsberg break-in "if necessary"; plotting to murder journalist Jack Anderson; plotting with a "gangland figure" to murder Howard Hunt to stop him from cooperating with investigators; plotting to firebomb the Brookings Institution; and plotting to kidnap "leftist guerillas" at the 1972 Republican National Convention -- a plan he outlined to the Nixon administration using terminology borrowed from the Nazis. (The murder, firebombing, and kidnapping plots were never carried out; the break-ins were.)
