BERNIE MAC dies of Sarcoidosis weeks after bad Obama joke

Weeks after making an off-color joke during a Barack Obama fundraiser, comedian Bernard J. McCollough - Bernie Mac - died o August 9, 2008 at age 50.

Bernie died of Sarcoidosis (sar"koi-do'sis), an immune system disorder.

According to a medical doctor familiar with the disease, "The overall mortality rate for hospitalized pneumonia is 8 percent. In those who do not respond within 72 hours, this jumps up to 25 percent. Bernie Mac had a prolonged hospital stay, suggesting that he did not initially respond well to antibiotic therapy. This fact alone gave him a much cloudier prognosis."

So what is Sarcoidosis? It involves inflammation that produces tiny lumps of cells in various organs in your body. The lumps are called granulomas (gran"u-lo'mahs) because they look like grains of sugar or sand. They are very small and can be seen only with a microscope.

These tiny granulomas can grow and clump together, making many large and small groups of lumps. If many granulomas form in an organ, they can affect how the organ works. This can cause symptoms of sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis can occur in almost any part of your body, although it usually affects some organs more than others. It usually starts in one of two places:

Lungs
Lymph nodes, especially the lymph nodes in your chest cavity.
