sorry i really do not know how it sounds with instruments but it has three levels of pickup so you should be ok. yes your ipod touch with FiRE should be fine.

its great for recording concerts, just make sure you have enough battery life to record it all. it also works in video mode, so you can video the concert with great sound,

I use this with the 3G and it works great for recording band practices. I've never heard mine make that noise though, I just get the message to put it in airplane mode.

One note, it will NOT work on the new iPhone 4.
