This is a puppet walk using magnets. The character of the witch was inspired from a photograph I took of a wall.

  • yeah seriously this video is awesome.. I cant stop watching it lol. How did you make his hands and hair!?

  • The hands are made from latex with a wire armature. The hair is wire wrapped in muslin fabric.

  • That is Very creepy. Can you tell me though, how did you use the magnets? Was it a steel floor or another set of magnets under the set?

  • It was a nightmare to use magnets. I was probably using it wrong, as I had no idea what I was doing. I put metal on its feet, metal floor and magnets underneath. I can't remember what type of metal I used, don't think it was steel, will find out and post later. The magnets were not strong enough (had loads) and it was a nightmare to animate as the puppet was moving all over the place. I am about to animate another puppet and have decided to use pins through the feet.

  • In the armatures I'm using, they have rare earth magnets in the feet, and rare earth magnets on the ends of wooden dowling. Then you just make sure the surface you're animating on is high enough that you can easily move your magnet 'wands' underneath it. You use the wands to hold feet of the puppet.

Lee Valley sells rare earth magnets, if you're near one. They aren't magic, but they're strong as heck. If you need more, you stack them up.

  • Thanks, I think the magnets I used were not strong enough. Also animating the foot with magnets are hard, to get precise movement. I have decided to do my latest animation using pins and fibreboard, much easier.
