THIS is sooooo heartbreaking! I don't watch horseracing now - I don't want to see horses destroy themselves attempting to win.......this happens too frequently. Secretariat was beloved (as was sweet & precious Barbaro - my heart breaks for his family!); I'm just glad Sec didn't breakdown on the track & raced healthy. Sec too suffered from Laminitis. This horrible disease must be eliminated!

@horsecrazy11 Any horse or animal lover worth their salt would shed a tear for Barbaro. They look so strong and healthy, muscular and dominant. the thought of having to put him down, regardless of his athletic accomplishments, is the same as the depth of sorrow in your soul. Human or not, we always think of "what might have been". Rest in peace and say hello to Man O war and Secretariat when you meet them. I/m certain they'd enjoy your company.

he may of not won but he was a great horse. RIP

I love you barbaro <3 rest in peace
what happened with his leg? and why?

@MarsvinsPaj In the second race of the Triple Crown, The Preakness Stakes, Barbaro broke down 200 yards into the race. He shattered his right hind leg. He probably mis-stepped and people blamed Brother Derek which was the horse behind him, claiming he stepped on Barbaro's foot. No one really knows. He died because of complications with Laminitis, not because of his leg.

babrbaro was a great racehorse but hes no legnd like secretariat

He was a great horse and no, he isn't a legend like Secretariat. Anyone can see that. But he was a legend in many ways. He beats many horses because he captured the heart of a NATION. That is legendary. Smarty Jones captured the hearts of America, no other horse has ever come close to capturing the heart of a nation. That's Barbaro. He will never be a legend like Secretariat, but he is in everyones hearts. Secretariat was great, but Barbaro was too. He just didn't have enough time to prove it.

@horsecrazy11 how old was sweet Barbaro whe he entered Preakness?. I've read we American start our racehorses too soon, before their legs are fully developed. I saw the 'Secretariat move' Barbaro used at the end of the race - He's a CLOSER! It's a shame he was injured! I MUST SAY, I saw a GLEAM of Secretariat in Barbaro's Kentucky Derby.......Couldn't THE OWNERS have waited a year? (No critisicm intended - I know they loved Barbaro)

@nin12dog Unfortunately the races of the Triple Crown are reserved for 3 year old horses. All race horses, regardless of the country, are started at 2 years old, which in my opinion is way too young. Barbaro broke down from a miss-step. I think he would have won the Triple Crown because he was undefeated before his break down. It's a tragic event and I think they should wait until they're at least 3 to start racing, but they're at their best in their prime. Barbaro was very loved =)
