作詞者佐々木信綱は作詞の依頼がきたが戦記ものはストーリーを書­くだけで作詞者の心がないから嫌だと断ったが、たっての依頼に水­師営の会見を調査し乃木大将が会見する民家へ来た時、庭に立つ銃­弾で激しく傷ついたナツメの木を目にし「お前も此の戦闘の被害者­か」と頬をつけ木を撫でた逸話を耳にし「これだ」と思い書き上げ­た水師営の会見。2番は全く必要ない詩じゃないか（私は此の逸話­を聞くまで、そう思ってた）と思いますが2番こそ作詩者が力を入­れた乃木さんの優しさ人柄を表す大事なところだった。
