Hormone therapies are very effective in preventing breast cancer from returning after surgery and in stopping new breast cancers from forming, according to breast cancer specialist Dr. Larry Norton of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Medications that block estrogen receptors, such as Tamoxifen, are often prescribed to pre-menopausal women. Aromatase inhibitors, which prevent the adrenal gland from making estrogen after menopause, are more effective for older women.
