Santa Fe 3751 passes through San Clemente on 5/1/2010 on its way to San Diego. I estimate she was going her limited speed of 40mph through Metrolink stations, and then no doubt she opened up the throttle when she was clear.

This video was shot with my Canon 5D Mark II. As a technical note this video really shows off the horrible moire pattern problem that these DSLRs exhibit with video.

  • Couldn't really discover the moire pattern problem. Can see some artefacts with the steam dissolving in the air when looking very close to the screen, but to me they appear as a youtube-compression facts. Should probarly see the original to really see it. Thanks for posting.

  • @Sanddesert Look at the cars as they go by. You need to watch it in HD to see it. The pattern shows up in the steel of the passenger cars.

  • @GDupons the diesel does provide the electric power supply for the lighting and air conditioning. Kind of like a "generator car"

  • I saw many videos of this impressive engine at youtube. There's always a Diesel behind the steam locomotive, why? It's an old machine, true, but strong enough to pull such trains. They aren't unreliable too. Is it for the electric power supply for the light and the air conditioning in the coaches?

  • She looks so beautiful next to the beach!

  • how often does 3751 run?

Ah, it's actually the inteference problem of lines and stripes you are talking about. Okay, yes i see it, but i do so on normal tv-broadcasts for example when people use striped shirts. Isn't that only solvable with progressive scan recordings, or in postproduction?

  • Nice video! One correction, though: San Clemente is actually a Metrolink station, not Amtrak. If you saw that crossing South of you, I was the railfan there with two cameras and tripods.

  • I was on this train!

  • nice shot, i bet alot of people at the beach weren't expecting to see that beauty roll by that day
