Restavek

The Religious of Jesus and Mary began a Mission in Haiti to help the Restavek children. The word restavek means "person who stays here" and it is used to refer to these children whose families have left them in the care of other families for whatever reason - be it poverty, disaster, or because they have no place themselves. The children are used to do chores in exchange for a bit of food and a home. I wrote this song about their plight and the efforts to help them. To learn more about them read the book "I Will Fly Again" or look up some of the articles you can find online. I am a teacher at the Villa Augustina and the RJMs began our school in their mission to follow St. Claudine Thevenet.
