I did some upgrades to a Nylint toy outboard - added a carbon brushed 260 sized electric motor to replace the original copper brushed one, installed some shims to the propshaft to get better gear engagement, and installed a heftier couping to join the motor to the driveshaft. This video shows it running on a 6V pack. I have run it on a toy boat with a 7.4V LiPo pack and it handles that well - enough to easily plane off the boat.

  • What kind of shims did you use for the propshaft?

  • I used a nylon washer that I trimmed to fit. Also thinned it a little to achieve the gear lash I was looking for. I thinned it by running it over a sanding block with my thumb. Not very exact, but it worked...

  • @NorthWindHarbor What part of the prop drivetrain did you put the nylon washer between?

  • @gatrwrks

The shim is located on the prop shaft at the aft end of the "bulge" for the gear, where it runs up against the outer housing. The idea is to keep the propshaft gear held against the pinion gear as mine was so sloppy that the pinion didn't always engage the propshaft gear, and when it did it was very loosely engaged. Now the gears mesh nicely with just a little play - if you mash the gears tight they'll chew themselves up. Took me a few tries to get them right.

  • would you recommend this for a wood 24" rc boat and that weighs 5 pounds. =]

  • @Camaromaster242

No, I would not recommend one of these for a boat that large. This motor would work well on a boat up to maybe 14-inches. For a 24-inch boat, I would recommend the Aquacraft EP1, available all over the place for under $100.00.
