Hornby Live Steam Mallard Ad-hoc Surrealist Layout

A Hornby Mallard OO-scale real live steam engine pulling a rake of coaches on a layout made up of scenic items loosely scattered around a steamproof dark green mat. The layout is very surreal, with a monorail running over various pieces of English-village style scenery, like something out of Portmeirion. Video includes shots taken using a train cam pulled (or pushed) around by the loco.

The monorail was made by a company that went out of business years ago, I can't remember the name. You can occasionally get them on eBay or similar sites. I looked for years to find one, then found someone selling them new in NZ, and offering spare track too. Sorry I can't be more useful.

Hello and thanks for the fantastic video, i have noticed that you have carpet under your track. Is it ordinary carpet? i am asking because i want to do the same with mine but i am afraid that the heat from the train may burn it. Thanks.

July 2010, Hornby isn't making the live steam sets any more. One company (sells on ebay) has all the stock left. They say at the rate they are selling only about 6 months left until its gone.

how much have you spent on that mate? Personally i would lose the monorail its doesn't fit in. I like the mallard but you really need to work on your scenery all in all tho prety good vid and layout.
