The Namuwongo Literacy Project aims to provide literacy opportunities for children in Namuwongo, Uganda who would otherwise receive no formal schooling whatsoever. This opportunity is offered in a secure environment with a structured program.
The Namuwongo Literacy Project has, as its ultimate goal, the establishment of 'free of charge', government reocgnized, full-time, co-educational, day school.
The immediate goal is to increase in the number of pupils, school hours and Ugandan teachers.
At the present time the Namuwongo Literacy Project services 35 children aged 5 years to 8 years.
The children, referred to the project by the director of the In-Need Home, all reside in the shanty town of Namuwongo and have been orphaned by war, familial violence and disease.
In some cases, the children may have had schooling, but the majority have had no formal schooling. Due to the financial burdens, the caregivers are unable to provide the necessary monies for fees, books, supplies and uniforms.
The Namuwongo Literacy Project is proud of its associations with the following organizations:
• In-Need Home Foundation
• Global Forum for International Co-operation - GFIC
• Concordia Volunteer Abroad Program CVAP
The Namuwongo Literacy Project is an opportunity to provide critical support in the form of raising awareness about poverty and education issues in Uganda and also building and raising monetary support.
