Get the complete 90 min concert at https://www.createspace.com/204634 This is one of the best music documentary features ever made - Live at Sing Sing Prison. Producer Harry Wiland and I filmed inside the joint. Scenes include a prison concert and other behind the scenes stories. This scene presents the amazing Voices of East Harlem. Other scenes involve BB King and Joan Baez, Jimmy Walker and the Voices of East Harlem and other performers.

  • Impressive image and singing of these young people ! Could you tell me the titre of this song ?, is it inclued in their CD ?, if so which CD ?

  • Unfortunately I never saw those wonderful folks again. They faded into oblivion I believe and I'm not sure whether they produced music that created a CD. It was a special moment in time and they work a self developed group that had just come out of Harlem. I am not sure that they had performed anywhere else. And the energy they projected on the stage was a new to most audiences that were used to the rising Black Pride music groups.

  • I shed a tear watching this one

  • @718xad Thank you for your comment. I know the feeling. The emotion I feel is for these girls and this time and the pride that they feel and the hope that they feel. They were an extraordinary group and they faded into oblivion for reasons I know not.

One of the most powerful live performances I've ever witnessed. The context of this group singing this song within Sing Sing in the later Civil-War/Black Pride era -- Damn! And the funk they are all laying down -- Amazing! I go back and view this clip almost daily. That is raw, honest, emotion from the performers and audience. It just doesn't get better.

  • Google the 'Voices Of East Harlem Page' to read more about this super-dynamic group. "Right On Be Free" was something of a commercial hit worldwide (Elektra), 1970, and they toured the UK on the strength of it. They later signed to Just Sunshine records for two albums and a clutch of 45s, including "Cashing In". Following it's initial spins at the Highland Room @Blackpool Mecca in 1975, this became by far their most popular underground 45 in the UK, and is now regarded as a Soul classic.

  • funky as hell, that is.

  • This is one of the most moving things I've ever seen. Tough and funy as hell and beautiful and tear-jerking all at the same time. Thank you for posting this.

Santana does a version of this song. Is it possible he got it from this group or is this song originally from another artist?
