Presently with the Alabama Hammers
The Alabama Hammers' first official signee is a familiar face -- complete with game-breaking speed, offensive talent and a defensive presence that made a mark in the former arenafootball2.
Now Travis Blanchard will display his talents in the Southern Indoor Football League.
Southern Sports and Entertainment announced recently that the Alabama Hammers would be Huntsville's expansion franchise in the newly revamped Southern Indoor Football League.
Alabama has announced the signing of the former All-af2 selection and Ironman specialists, an ex-Ole Miss standout who thrived on offense and defense with the late Tennessee Valley Vipers franchise that gives way to the Hammers.
"Travis is a class act, a leader and a great competitor who is the perfect representation of the kind of player that we want to build this franchise around,'' Hammers President Joe Stroud said. "He is a playmaker - pure and simple."
Blanchard (5-foot-11, 185 pounds) was an All-af2 special teams and Ironman selection from 2007 to '09 and set the Vipers record for rushing touchdowns and all-time return yards. At Ole Miss, Blanchard played in 48 games from 2000 to '03 and recorded 152 tackles with two interceptions.
"I'm really excited about being part of the new Alabama Hammers and proud to be the first signee for the new year,'' Blanchard said. "It also shows me how dedicated the whole front office staff is and seriously ready for continued success here in Huntsville. I surely want to be a part of it and I can't wait to play again in front the great fans we have here and across the Tennessee Valley."
Hammers season tickets and merchandise are now on sale and can be purchased by calling 256-551-2222 or for more information visit the Alabama website at www.alabamahammers.com.
The team's first game is set for March 20 against the Columbus Lions in Huntsville.
