On Earth Day, Democracy Now! interviews Vandana Shiva, prominent environmental leader, feminist and thinker from India. Shiva discussed the anti-nuclear movement in India, which has gained momentum over stopping the construction of a new six-reactor nuclear power station on the coastal plains of Jaitapur, India, in an area known for mango and cashew production. On Monday, Indian police opened fire on hundreds of protesters at a demonstration against the nuclear power plant, killed one person. More than 20 people were arrested. Shiva takes on British environmentalist George Monbiot, who recently discussed on Democracy Now! why he is in support of nuclear power, despite the ongoing crisis in Japan.
"Most civilizations of the world, for most of human history, have seen the world in terms of relatedness and connection," Shiva says. "And if there's one thing the rights of Mother Earth is waking us to, is we are all connected. And it's in that connection we can't have arrogant solutions, like nuclear is clean. Just because you don't see the radiation doesn't make it clean."
This is just an excerpt of an extended interview with Vandana Shiva and environmentalist Maude Barlow. Click here to watch the entire interview: http://www.democracynow.org/2011/4/22/earth_day_special_vandana_shiva_and

The environmentalists seem to disapprove of all and any methods of power generation. What would they have? A return to 19th century agriculture.. Can we be a nation of farmers in today's world?

@gwalavalkar Nuclear power plant is the ONLY large scale clean power source, how will we power our chemical plants and manufacturing factories when the sun don't shine and the wind don't blow...which is called a calm night....I like renewable power but I think that Nuclear is way better than coal or oil and at this point wind and solar simply do not have the 'energy density' to power us...maybe in the future, nuclear's all we have now..the other option is a candles..imported from China ;)

She is stupid...she's exploiting a vital energy asset for political reasons...I mean mangoes instead of Nuclear Power Plants...really...please ignore her and let India progress

From the beginning of this race to use cheap nuke power, I had ,even as a teen wondered, about the fact, they put the waste in barrels to keep stored for ..I don't know, thousands, millions, billions of years? Unfathomable that anyone with half a brain could even contemplate doing this.Sending peace, love and support from Canada, power to people who are speaking truth in this world, much love ,Bettina

Yes, thank you, I WILL continue to support research on green energy and oppose the far more harmful drilling and mining which is destroying entire ecosystems in this country and around the world, though I do oppose hydroelectric power. You can try those arguments you mentioned, but you'll inevitably fail. Thank you for your support and encouragement. You have failed utterly to convince me of any other course of action.

@usam1981 Your information is incorrect. Suggest you first look up on wikipedia: Scientific_opinion_on_climate_change ...and then... List_of_scientists_opposing_the_mainstream_scientific_assessment_of_global_warming
The first article lists over 33 COUNTRIES that have endorsed the concept of confirming anthropogenic global warming. The second article lists only forty SCIENTISTS who doubt or oppose it - and this is just wiki. There's little doubt the divisions are even steeper than this.
