Matthew 23:9

9 And do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.

This teaching was inspired by what Catholic Commentators of the New American Bible wrote concerning Matthew 23:1-12. In these verses Jesus teaches the crowds and his disciples to call no man on earth Father and also forbidding other titles. Here is the statement made by the Catholic New American Bible Commentary, copyright 1991:

The Matthean Jesus forbids not only the titles but the spirit of superiority and pride that is shown by their acceptance.

We were shocked to find this statement not in a protestant commentary, but in a Catholic commentary! Matthean Jesus, is this commentary suggesting that there is more than one Jesus? Is the Catholic church somehow suggesting that the Jesus found in the Gospel of Matthew is actually another Jesus than the one that they claim. Furthermore, this proves to us that at least someone in Rome knows that calling the priest Father and the pope Holy Father is wrong.

  • You are a fool. The Catholic Church was founded by our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ is not forbidding the use of the term father! What do you call your biological father? We also have spiritual fathers such as a Priest.

    Was James breaking Christ's command:

James 2:21 - "Was not Abraham our FATHER justified by works, offering up Isaac his son upon the altar?"

    - Out of the multitude of verses which refute your false position, this one refutes also Sola Fide!

  • Jesus was not telling us to take the word "father" out of the dictionary, he was not saying that we can not call our dad "father". He was simply referring to the use of the word as a title for leaders.

  • father=god ?

  • @jdk0711 i'm sorry, i emant "Augustus", not "Tiberius"

  • Context of Mt 23:8-Don't call anyone God (other than God), rather than to not call anyone "father." The context can be better understood if one first understands that the Roman emperor of the time (Tiberius) referred to himself as a God (as evidenced by the denarius referenced in Luke 20:24), and wanted his subjects to call him "Father." Not to mention Jesus refers to Abraham as "Father Abraham" Catholic priests are called "Father" as a title of respect, not worship.

If you would like to debate the issue in depth PM me. Your position is contrary to the clear meaning of the text, the context and cannot withstand even the mildest scrutiny.

  • @sirhood2

I have already refuted this nonsense. It is truly absurd that you would continue to say that this commandment forbids the making of ANY statues/models/images etc., especially when I have shown you that GOD HIMSELF commanded CHERUBS and a SERPENT to be made! This is God Himself! Was He therefore telling men to break His own command? NO. Therefore, it is your isogesis which is mistaken. God is forbidding the making of IDOLS for the purpose of WORSHIPING! This is the clear meaning.

  • @iotaunam1 Now I ask YOU! Can YOU read? Read the first 3 or 4 commandments. THOU SHALT NOT MAKE UNTO THEE ANY GRAVEN IMAGE IN THE LIKENESS OF ANYTHING IN HEAVEN, ON EARTH, OR UNDER THE EARTH. THOU SHALT NOT BOW THYSELF TO THEM. That's not me, it's Bible. Jeus COMMANDED it. It wasn't a request. I was a command! and Order! Having pictures is one thing. Having statues of angels and such in your house is disobedient to God's commandments!

  • Holy Moses you called yourself a Bible Teacher... Matt. 23:8 – in this teaching, Jesus also says not to call anyone teacher or rabbi as well. But don’t Protestants call their teachers “teacher?” What about this commandment of Jesus? When Protestants say “call no man father,” they must also argue that we cannot call any man teacher either.

  • I think Jesus is using an example to talk about humility, not creating a doctrine of what we can a can't say.

  • @tercelkisor

Your avoidance of an indepth discussion is clear for all to see. The reason I wont discuss here is because these small comment boxes are for comments and wont alow a detailed quotation and exegesis of Scripture. If you were serous, and sure of your position and open to the Truth, then you would have no problems with an indepth discussion. Fear of someone else "mixing words" shouldnt hinder you, since clear logic is enough to refute such nonsense: I refute it all the time.
