Schoolchildren release more than 120,000 ladybugs into the garden at Edna Maguire Elementary School in Mill Valley on Thursday. Ladybugs are natural predators that can rid gardens of pests yet not harm plants. Ladybugs can eat hundreds of aphids a day, but spiders are good guys, too. Spiders do 80 percent of the pest control, eating whiteflies and aphids off roses, according to Sharon Lovejoy, author of the "Trowel & Error: Over 700 Tips, Remedies and Shortcuts for the Gardener."
