@minimitmit I understand what you mean even though I didn't hear this by Hotter. Prey's voice is a little softer than you imagine this song to be. Fischer-Dieskau I like best. Still unforgettable Prey version.

It's amazing to me that Prey could be such a ham on the opera stage (in a generous, charming way), and then sing lieder like this with such stillness and simplicity. It's almost a self-effacing performance, but truly it takes a great artist to have the courage to step aside and trust the music and words speak for themselves. I was lucky enough to attend one of his last Winterreise performances. He barely moved, and his voice showed its age, but it was totally riveting.

Perhaps the most beautiful Baritone-voice of the last 50 years. Mr. Prey was excellent as a Liedersinger - his rendition of "Die schöne Müllerin" with Leonard Hokanson is a masterpiece of subtly singing. And in his book "Premierenfieber" he gave a worth reading essay about "Winterreise".
